Why correct engine oil specifications matter

One Wrong Number Can Turn a Simple Oil Change Into a Costly Mistake

Choosing oil is more than matching a number on a bottle. The viscosity grade, manufacturer approval, oil capacity, and filter fitment all work together. A page that only says “use 5W-30” can still be incomplete if the vehicle has multiple engines or if the refill amount changes with the filter.

Capacity matters. Underfilling can leave the engine low on oil after startup, while overfilling can cause foaming, smoke, leaks, or warning lights. For a normal service, the capacity with filter is usually the number to research first.

Specifications matter. Turbo, hybrid, diesel, European, and performance engines may need more than a viscosity number. Always compare the bottle label with the required API, ILSAC, ACEA, or manufacturer approval before buying.

Engine oil FAQs

Quick Answers Before You Buy Oil

What engine oil does my car need?

Your car needs the viscosity grade and oil specification listed in the owner's manual for its exact engine. The same model can use different oil depending on year, engine, trim, and market.

How often should I change my engine oil?

Follow the normal or severe-service schedule for your vehicle. Short trips, towing, idling, heavy traffic, dust, heat, and cold starts can require earlier oil changes.

What is the difference between 5W-30 and 0W-20 oil?

Both are multi-grade oils, but 0W-20 usually flows better in cold starts and is thinner at operating temperature than 5W-30. Use only the grade your vehicle allows.

How many quarts should I buy?

Use the capacity with filter for a normal oil and filter change, then round your purchase to practical bottle sizes. Refill gradually and verify the final level on the dipstick.

Can I use synthetic oil in an older vehicle?

Many older vehicles can use synthetic oil when the viscosity and specification match the manual. High-mileage engines may also benefit from high-mileage oil, but leaks or burning oil should be diagnosed.
